  6. Wikipedia is free content, voluntarily edited and published website. Contents on Wikipedia are mostly provided by volunteers & fact-checked by references given by editors.

Mostly Wikipedia can be accessed by anybody, from anywhere.
There are no limitations and barriers, which exists in case of direct learning, where it depends on perceptions and skill of teacher.

Language barriers didn't exist as it provides contents in all major languages.

As Wikipedia provides information on all subjects, learners will be able to access, learn, grasp all things what they want.

Content is also transparent in nature as it is fact-checked by Wikipedia.

It also avails everybody to make contribution in making content more and more transparent, which ultimately serves its purpose.

  12. Using Wikis for Learning and Collaboration:

Everyone knows about Wikipedia, a grand example of a wiki, but what about using smaller wikis in your workplace or for collaborative work? The main advantage of using a wiki for collaborative work is that it eliminates the need to email different versions of documents among team members. This reduces confusion and ensures that all team members have access to the current version as its updated.
A wiki is a collaborative website that collects and organizes content, created and revised by its users. Consider using a wiki—a website that contains pages that can be easily created and edited by multiple users. Several characteristics of Wikis make them excellent choices for projects that involve brainstorming and research.
Wikipedia is a tool for the Enterprise 2.0. An important feature of a wiki is that information should be easily accessible. For example, suppose an organization rolls out new software that novice users are finding difficult to use then the users of that software could contribute tips and guidance on various software procedures through the wiki.
There are different uses of wiki as well such as, it can be used when an organization needs to collect and distribute information or it can be used when geographically dispersed team members need to collaborate. Through this there are many advantages of wiki for which people are more attracted to wiki for learning purpose.
Wikis develop a sense of community. They typically have a history page that lists the original contributor of an article and those who have edited and made revisions. This type of open collaboration provides contributors with a sense of ownership. There are different wiki softwares such as Wikispaces, Mediawiki, TikiWiki and DokuWiki. This tools helps members to post and access teaching and learning tasks from the different part of the world.
